116th Birth Anniversary of Frida Kahlo

116th Birth Anniversary of Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo, born Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderon, was born on July 6th, 1907, in Mexico. She is one of the greatest Mexican painters of all time. As a child, Kahlo was outspoken and brave, which made her famous in school. In 1922, when she was still in school, Frida met with an accident, which fractured her spine and pelvis. To recover from this, she returned home and took up painting as a pass time hobby. She started to paint pictures of herself, claiming that she was the subject she knew best. In 1926, she painted the Self Portrait in a Velvet Dress as a token of love for her then-lover.

All through her life, Frida continued to paint. Almost all of her paintings have the underlying themes of pain and suffering, which were expressed through her surrealism. Throughout her life, Kahlo endured several traumatic experiences such as infidelity in marriage, miscarriages, divorce and mental and physical health problems. Her life events influenced her paintings in a major way.

Ever since her death in 1907, Frida’s paintings have been gaining more popularity. Some of her most famous works include The Two Fridas, Self Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird, and The Self Portrait with Loose Hair.
