2023 ISSF World Shooting Championships

The World Shooting Championships started a decade before the establishment of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF), in 1897. The ISSF was founded in 1907. It is responsible for managing the Olympic shooting events. The federation also takes care of many non-Olympic shooting sports. Earlier, the ISSF World Shooting Championships were held annually, but since 1954, the championships have been held once every four years. 

The 2023 ISSF World Shooting Championships started on August 14 and is scheduled to end on September 1. The event is being held in Baku, Azerbaijan. A total of 1249 athletes from 101 nations participated in the championships. The last medals for the various events were handed out on August 24, 2023. The athletes who showed exceptional performance in this championship will be selected to participate in the 2024 Summer Olympics. 

India participated in the 2023 ISSF World Shooting Championships and won 6 gold and 8 bronze medals. India won gold in the following events:

  • 25m Standard Pistol (Amanpreet Singh)
  • 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team (Esha Singh and Shiva Narwal)
  • 10m Air Rifle Women’s Team (Mehuli Ghosh, Tilottama Sen and Ramita)
  • 25m Pistol Women’s Team (Rhythm Sangwan, Esha Singh and Manu Bhaker)
  • 50m Rifle 3 Positions Men Team (Aishwary Tomar, Niraj Kumar and Akhil Sheoran)
  • 50m Pistol Team (Tiyana, Sakshi Suryavanshi and Kirandeep Kaur)

India won bronze in the following shooting events:

  • 10m Air Rifle (Mehuli Ghosh)
  • 50m Women’s pistol (Tiyana)
  • 25m Standard Pistol Team (Tiyana, Yashita Shokeen and Kritikka Sharma)
  • 50m Rifle 3 Positions Team (Akhil Sheoran)
  • 50m Pistol Team (Vikram Shinde, Kamaleet and Ravinder Singh)
  • 50m Men’s pistol (Ravinder Singh)
  • 10m Air Pistol Team (Arjun Cheema, Sarabjot Singh and Shiva Narwal)
  • 25 m Center Fire Pistol Team (Gaurav Chaudhary, Akshay Jain and Rajendra Bagul)

In total, India won 14 medals, just behind China who won the highest number of medals (15 gold, 7 silver and 6 bronze). The third place was secured by the United States with 8 medals (5 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze).
