Army Day 2024

Army Day 2024

Every year on 15th January, we celebrate National Army Day in India to commemorate when the Indian Army got its first Indian commander-in-chief. On 15th January 1949, General K.M. Cariappa took over as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, replacing General Sir Francis Roy Bucher. This symbolised the beginning of India’s transition from British rule to self-governance. To celebrate this huge victory, the Indian Government declared 15th January as the National Army Day. This day is celebrated in the nation with pride and honour.

In 2024, Lucknow will host its first Army Day parade. Since independence, this marks the second time that the parade has taken place outside of Delhi. Different contingents of the Indian Army, such as the Jatt regiment and Garhwal Rifles, will be part of the parade. Also, the Indian Air Force will be part of the parade as fighter jets and helicopters will perform aerial exercises. The gallantry awards of the army will be honoured during the event. Many initiatives such as blood donation campaigns, military band concerts, tree plantation drives and the Know Your Army Festival, will be celebrated around the day.

The theme of the day in 2024 is “In Service of the Nation.” The theme highlights the bravery and confidence shown by the Indian Army in protecting the people of the nation. This day reminds the people to honour the brave men and women fighting for the protection of our country.
