Asian Games 2023

Asian Games 2023

Every four years, athletes from different Asian countries come together to participate in various sports events held at the Asian Games, also known as Asiad. The first Asian Games was played in 1951, at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi. Till 1978, the championships were regulated by the Asian Games Federation (AGF). In 1982, the AGF was succeeded by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) due to a split in the former organising committee. Today, the Asian Games is the second biggest sporting event after the Olympic Games.

To date, nine nations have hosted the Asian Games. They are India, Philippines, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, Iran, South Korea, China and Qatar. Japan has scored the highest number of medals (60) at the Asian Games, followed by India with 51 medals.

The Asian Games 2023 will be held in Hangzhou, China between September 23 and October 8. Many Indian athletes such as PV Sindhu (badminton), R. Praggnanandhaa (chess), Avinash Sable (steeplechase) and Murali Sreeshankar (long jump) will be participating in the championships. The Indian 655-member contingent will be led by India’s Golden Boy Neeraj Chopra. Indian athletes will be seen competing in 41 sporting events out of 61. Making their debut in the 19th Asian Games will be the men’s and women’s cricket teams.
