Bhavani Devi Becomes the First India to Win Medal in Asian Championships

The Asian Fencing Championships is a fencing tournament for the Asia-Oceanic zone. It is organized by the Asian Fencing Confederation. Although the championship was established in 1973, it did not take place as planned. Later, it was re-established in 1989 and has been held every year since. 

Fencing is a sport which resembles sword fighting. The players were protective clothes and fight each other with a thin sword. 

The 2023 Asian Fencing Championships started on June 17 and will end on June 22. The championship is held at Wuxi in China. There are several categories in the tournament, including Men’s individual epee, Women’s individual epee, Men’s team epee, Women’s team epee, Men’s individual sabre, Women’s individual sabre and more. A total of 8 countries will be playing against one another. Olympian Bhavani Devi made history in the 2023 Asian Fencing Championship by winning India’s first-ever medal at the event. She defeated the World Champion Misaki Emura and entered the semifinals. However, she lost to the Uzbekistan player Zaynab Dayibekova in the semifinals and won a bronze medal.
