C.R. Rao Wins the 2023 International Prize in Statistics

Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao, a 102 year old Indian-American Mathematician is all set to receive the 2023 International Prize in Statistics, which is equivalent to receiving a nobel prize in the field. This award is given once every two years, to an individual or team of individuals, when they have contributed to human welfare, science or technology by using statistics. The award also holds a cash prize of $80,000. 

C.R. Rao was born in Karnataka, in a Telugu family. He has contributed significantly to several fields including statistics, especially through his 1945 paper titled, “Information and Accuracy Attainable in the Estimation of Statistical Parameters”. He was only 25 years old when the paper was published in the Bulletin of the Calcutta Mathematical Society. 

Now, he will be receiving the 2023 International Prize in Statistics for the 75-year-old paper at the International Statistical Institute World Statistics Congress in Ottawa, Canada, in July.
