December Solstice 2023

December Solstice 2023

A solstice is an astronomical event that takes place when the Sun reaches its highest or lowest apparent position in the sky, as observed from Earth. The position of the Sun results in the shortest and the longest day on Earth. It occurs when either of the Earth’s poles reaches its maximum tilt away from the sun. There are two solstices every year- one in December and one in June. December Solstice, also known as Southern Solstice, is the shortest day of the year. The December Solstice generally falls on the 21st of December every year but may vary by one or two days.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the December solstice is the winter solstice, while in the Southern Hemisphere, it is the summer solstice. In most countries in the northern hemisphere, the solstice is believed to be the start of the winter season.

This natural event holds a significant amount of importance in many cultures. In modern times, the Solstice is celebrated in numerous ways, from lighting candles to signify the return of light to festivals that honour the Sun’s “rebirth.”

Interestingly, places within the Antarctic Circle experience a phenomenon called the Midnight Sun during this time. This is when the Sun stays visible throughout the night, creating an out-of-the-world experience. The December Solstice, besides being a celestial event, is a wonderful blend of cultural traditions and modern celebrations that honour the unique events of our universe.
