Ding Liren Becomes the First Chinese World Chess Champion

The World Chess Championship 2023 was held from April 7 to 30 at St. Regis Astana Hotel in Astana, Kazakhstan. The chess match was between Ding Liren of China and Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia. The match involved 14 games and 4 tiebreakers, in the last of which Ding Liren emerged victorious. Not only did he win the title of the 17th World Chess Champion, but also secured a place in history as China’s first world chess champion.

With this win, Ding took over the World Chess Champion title from Norway’s Magnus Carlsen, who decided not to defend his title this year, although the latter still holds the record for the highest peak rating in chess of 2882.
