2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup

The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) is one of the most reputed sports organizations in the world. Once every four years, the FIFA Men’s and Women’s World Cups are held. The FIFA Women’s World Cup was established in 1991. 

With the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, 9 FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments have been played so far. Before 2023, only four teams had won the title. The United States won the title four times, followed by Germany with two winning titles. Japan and Norway won once each. The FIFA Women’s World Cups in 2019 and 2015 were both won by the United States.

This year, we witnessed the 9th edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The championship started on July 20 and came to an end on August 20. In a first, this year, Australia and New Zealand jointly hosted the World Cup. The opening match was played on July 20 at Eden Park in New Zealand between the host nation and Norway, where the host team emerged victorious. 

For the first time in the history of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, 32 teams participated in the tournament as opposed to the previous format of 24 teams. The 4 teams to make it to the semi-finals included Spain, Sweden, Australia and England. 

The finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 took place on August 20, 2023, at Sydney Olympic Stadium in Australia, between Spain and England. Spain emerged victorious against England 1-0 in the final match. This was not only Spain’s first title win but also the first European nation to win since 2007.
