Former Chief Minister of Bihar Awarded the Bharat Ratna

Late Karpoori Thakur was awarded the Bharat Ratna, on January 23rd 2024. The Bharat Ratna is one of the most important awards in India. Karpoori Thakur served as the Chief Minister of Bihar twice during the 1970s. 

Karpoori Thakur was fondly given the title ‘Jannayak,’ meaning people’s leader. He was born on January 24th 1924, in Bihar. He was a freedom fighter. He was also the Education Minister of the Bihar. He passed away on February 17th, 1988, during his second term as the Chief Minister of Bihar.

Late Karpoori Thakur was awarded the Bharat Ratna a day before his 100th birth anniversary by the President of India, Draupadi Murmu. He became the 49th recipient of the Bharat Ratna. Also, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Karpoori Thakur on social media platform X.
