Foundation Day of Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya

Foundation Day of Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya

On 21st January 1972, the Indian states of Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya were granted statehood under the North Eastern Region Re-Organisation Act of 1971. This year marks the 52nd foundation year for the three states. This day is celebrated with great enthusiasm and grandeur in the northeastern region of India.

There are seven states in the northeastern part of India: Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, and Tripura. These states are called the ‘Seven sisters of India’.

After twenty-four years of Indian Independence, Tripura and Manipur were granted statehood. They used to be Princely states- during the British Raj in India, they were ruled by monarchs instead of the British. In October of 1949, both states became a part of India. Meghalaya was earlier a part of the state of Assam, and it decided to separate itself to create a separate state for the tribal population of the region.

The people of Tripura, Manipur, and Meghalaya celebrate their foundation days with great pride. The Prime Minister greets and sends wishes to the people for Joining statehood. Various cultural programs are organised today, where the rich culture and heritage of the three states are celebrated.
