G20 Summit Comes to an End

The 18th G20 Summit was held in Delhi on September 9 and 10 at the Bharat Mandapam International Exhibition- Convention Centre (IECC). This was the last G20 (Group of Twenty) summit of the year. Leaders from all the 20 member nations participated in the G20 summit. The meeting was chaired by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

To prepare for the event, Delhi took every possible measure to ensure that the venue was clean and secure. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) was able to achieve a remarkable milestone in keeping the Air Quality Index (AQI) below 100 during the days of the event. Out of 20 monitored locations, 17 locations had AQI levels below 100. Around 1,000 sanitation workers worked in shifts to clean the roads and market areas.

The 18th G20 Summit brought with it several outcomes. At the end of the summit, the New Delhi Leaders Declaration was adopted by all the 20 members of the G20. The declaration contains the duties of the countries towards a better economic future. Some of the aims mentioned in the declaration are closing the gender gap, easy accessibility to healthcare and supplies, and reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The G20 summit laid the path for the launch of a new organization called the Global Biofuel Alliance (GBA). This initiative was launched to encourage the growth and use of sustainable biofuels.

It was jointly agreed by a couple of nations to build the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor which is intended to be a rail and shipping corridor connecting India with Europe and the Middle East.

The 18th G20 Summit concluded with the African Union becoming a permanent member of the G20.
