Gandhi Jayanti 2023

Gandhi Jayanti 2023

Every year on October 2, we celebrate Gandhi Jayanti to commemorate the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. This year, we are celebrating the 154th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, popularly referred to as “Bapu” was one of India’s most prominent freedom fighters. His relentless contribution towards freeing India from British Rule is still taught in History books all across the country.

Gandhiji was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat. By profession, he was a lawyer who practised in South Africa from 1893 to 1914. At the age of 45, he returned to India and immediately began protesting and fighting for the rights of Indian farmers, peasants and labourers. He took the leadership of the Indian National Congress in 1921. Gandhiji worked to eliminate poverty and promoted women’s rights. He ended the practice of untouchability and inspired Indians to make their own clothes using the charkha.

Due to his immense efforts towards India and its people, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose gave him the title of “Father of The Nation”.

Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated in all the states of India and is a National Holiday. Every year prayer service is held at Gandhiji’s memorial, the Raj Ghat in New Delhi. Commemorative ceremonies are held in schools, colleges and other institutions.
