Goa Liberation Day 2023

Every year on 19th December, we celebrate the Goa Liberation Day in India. The word liberation means to set something free. Goa and the current union territories of Daman and Diu were under the rule of the Portuguese. Portugal is a country on the European continent. People belonging to Portugal are called Portuguese. On this day, Goa became a part of India.

After India gained freedom from the British in 1947, Goa was still under another country’s rule. Finally, on 19th December 1961, with the help of the Indian army, Goa was freed from Portuguese rule. On the same day, it became a part of India. The Portuguese ruled Goa for 451 years. In 2023, We are celebrating the 62nd anniversary of Goa’s freedom. 

To celebrate this day of freedom, President Draupadi Murmu congratulated the people of Goa on the social media site named ‘X’. She paid tribute to the Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives to free Goa. Every year, the people of Goa unite to celebrate this day with great joy and pride.
