Gujarat’s Garba Receives UNESCO Recognition 

Garba is a traditional dance form done in the Indian state of Gujarat. It is now on a special list by UNESCO called the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). 

UNESCO is a special organisation that promotes unity among countries. The Chief Minister of Gujarat, Bhupendra Patel, shared this exciting news on a social media platform called X (previously known as Twitter) on December 6th.

Garba is a special kind of dance which is done during the Navaratri festival. It is a religious dance where people pay respect to Goddess Amba. Usually, this dance is done by women. The dancers move in a circle while singing and clapping their hands.

UNESCO made this list to protect important cultures and traditions all over the world. Garba is the 15th cultural treasure from India to be on this list! Some other famous Indian celebrations like Durga Puja and Kumbh Mela are also on this list.

To celebrate this big achievement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his happiness on social media platform X. He described Garbas as a celebration of life, unity and deep-rooted traditions.
