On June 5, every country around the globe celebrated World Environment Day, including India. India has always been a land of myriad expressions and it was no surprise that she would have her own way of celebrating the occasion. Different parts of India witnessed colorful, innovative and expressive forms of honoring the day.

Planting saplings is a common way of celebrating World Environment Day. This year, many states participated in this activity and aimed towards building a sustainable future. Several students from the Asian Institute of Management and Technology took the initiative to plant tree saplings at the Assam State Zoo to mark World Environment Day in Guwahati. The officials at the National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) Bongaigaon, situated in Salakati, Assam, celebrated the World Environment by planting 100 saplings of different varieties including medicinal plants across the town.

A total of 1000 saplings were planted across the state of Jharkhand by the Jharkhand Energy Department. By the end of this year, the Department hopes to plant more than 50,000 saplings.

Many schools and colleges across several districts of Karnataka participated in rallies, which were followed by planting of saplings in the premises of their educational institutes. A good number of local residents partook in the activity by planting saplings along the roadside and playgrounds.

Almost every state of India witnessed World Environment Day rallies. A similar cycle rally was held by BSF personnel in Amritsar. A vibrant awareness rally was organized by artistes in Calcutta to mark World Environment Day.
