India’s First Female Supreme Court Judge Passes Away

Justice M. Fathima Beevi passed away yesterday at the age of 96 in Kollam, Kerala. She was the first female judge to be appointed to the Supreme Court of India. She also served as the Governor of Tamil Nadu from 1997 to 2001.  

Justice Beevi was born on 30th April 1927, in Kerala. She was encouraged by her father to become a lawyer. In 1950, she passed the exam with the highest score in her batch and was awarded a gold medal. 

She started her career as a lawyer in Kerala. In 1983, she became the first Muslim female judge in the Kerala High Court. In 1989, she created history by becoming the first female judge in the Supreme Court of India. After her retirement, she served as Governor of Tamil Nadu. 

Justice Beevi was a guiding light for millions of Indians. After her, ten other amazing women have become Supreme Court judges in India. She was a very brave woman, and her successful career is now a proud part of Indian history, something we can all be inspired by.
