International Children’s Day

International Children’s Day

International Children’s Day is celebrated every year on June 1 by several countries in the world. The aim of celebrating this day is to raise awareness about the rights and wellbeing of children all around the world. The day attempts to shed light on the serious issues faced by children, such as child abuse, lack of access to basic education, poverty and hunger. International Children’s Day makes people realize the challenges faced by the youngest members of the society and attempts to unite people to improve the quality of lives of children.

International Children’s Day is sometimes celebrated on different dates in different parts of the world. This day was first proclaimed in 1925 during the World Conference on Child Welfare in Geneva. In this conference, the need for protecting the rights and wellbeing of Children was discussed. It was seen that children were deeply affected by the atrocities happening in the world, since the Industrial Revolution and the World Wars. Children were suffering from lack of basic human rights, abused, oppressed and forced to partake in unethical activities.

It was not until November 4, 1949, that the International Children’s Day for Protection of Children was established by the Women’s International Democratic Federation in Moscow. Since then, attempts have been made to better the lives of children all around the globe.
