International Day of Education 2024

International Day of Education 2024

Every 24th January, we celebrate International Day of Education globally to highlight the importance of education in spreading peace and unlearning hateful prejudices. Education is both- a human right and a public responsibility. With the rise of discrimination, racism, and hate speech, providing proper education to all is the only way to help people unlearn these harmful practices.

On 3rd December 2018, the United Nations General Assembly declared 24th January as the International Day of Education to celebrate the role of education in peace and development. According to Article 26 of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), “Everyone has the right to education”. However, there are around 258 million children and youth who do not attend school. Almost 773 million adults worldwide are illiterate and denied the right to education. International Literacy Day highlights the importance of education in ending this violation.

In 2024, the theme of the International Day of Education is “learning for lasting peace”. An education system that teaches equality and peace will create a society which is accepting of one another. In conclusion, the International Day of Education highlights the vital role of education in promoting peace and unity.
