International Day of Girl Child 2023

International Day of Girl Child

The International Day of the Girl is observed annually on October 11. This day aims to bring attention to the importance of girls’ education, their rights, and promoting gender equality.

In 1995, the World Conference on Women held in Beijing resulted in many countries adopting the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. This was the first international document that asked for the rights of girls. In 2011, The United Nations General Assembly declared 11 October as the International Day of the Girl Child.

The main aim of this day is to point out that girls have the right to safe, educated, and healthy lives, not only during their formative years but also as they mature into women. This day points out what will happen when problems faced by women are solved. Educating girls will help reduce the rate of child marriages and diseases.

The theme of International Day of the Girl 2023 is “Invest in Girls’ Rights: Our Leadership, Our Well-being.” This theme brings out the need to invest in girls’ education and health, recognizing that their leadership and well-being are necessary for a fairer and more equal future.
