International Day of Neutrality 2023

Every year on 12th December, we celebrate International Day of Neutrality. This day raises awareness about the importance of neutrality in international relations. This day is celebrated globally by promoting ideas of peace and international security. 

According to the United Nations, neutrality is a state where a country does not take sides between two nations in conflict and remains impartial towards them. To understand it in a better manner, let us take an example. If a war happens between Country A and Country B, Country C remains neutral by not supporting or opposing either. 

The Central-Asian country of Turkmenistan was the one to propose the idea of celebrating this day. The idea was approved on 2nd February 2017, and 12th December was announced as the International Day of Neutrality. 

Switzerland, Iceland and Sweden are examples of countries that have chosen to remain neutral during major political conflicts. Our country India defines itself as a ‘Non-aligned’ country but does not take sides during global conflicts. 

The idea of neutrality promotes the settlement of international disputes by peaceful means. This day also highlights the importance of developing mutually beneficial relationships between countries globally. We can celebrate this day by learning about neutrality and its role in global peace.
