International Day of the World’s Indigenous People

International Day of the World’s Indigenous People

The International Day of the World’s Indigenous People is also known as World Tribal Day. This day is celebrated every year on August 9. On this day we celebrate the people belonging to tribal communities. World Tribal Day was established by the United Nations in 1994.

As of now, the global population of indigenous or tribal people is between 370-500 million. They make up 6% of the world’s population. Even though they make up a tiny portion of the global population, they face many challenges such as poverty, discrimination and lack of access to healthcare and education.

In India, indigenous people make up 8.6% of the population with their numbers reaching 104 million. Odisha has the highest number of tribal communities living in the state.

World Tribal Day encourages people all across the world to come together and work towards creating a better future for indigenous people.
