International Day of UN Peacekeepers

International Day of UN Peacekeepers

Held annually on May 29, the International Day of UN Peacekeepers is a day dedicated to celebrating the immense contribution and effort of the United Nations peacekeepers. They work endlessly to maintain peace and harmony in the world. This day also commemorates those who lost their lives while serving the line of duty.

The International Day of UN Peacekeepers is significant for several reasons. Apart from celebrating the handwork of peacekeepers and those who sacrificed their lives for the cause, this day also helps to spread awareness of the work that the UN does and promote global peace and security among the general public.

May 29 was chosen for the International Day of UN Peacekeepers because the first UN peacekeeping mission was created on this date. On May 29, 1948, The United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) was established by the United Nations Security Council to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

This year we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers. The theme for this year’s day is ‘Peace begins with me’.
