International Day of Yoga

International Day of Yoga

Every year on June 21, we celebrate the International Day of Yoga. The word Yoga comes from the Sanskrit word “yoke” meaning union. Yoga is designed to align the physical, mental and spiritual body. The practice of yoga dates back to ancient India. Today, yoga is practised worldwide.

This day was first suggested by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing the United Nations in 2014. He selected June 21 as the date for the International Day of Yoga since it is the Summer Solstice. The longest day in the Northern Hemisphere is known as the Summer Solstice. He said that this day was significant to many regions of the world. In Hinduism, Shiva or Adi Yogi was the first yogi in the world. He started imparting his knowledge to others on this day. The UN decided to go through with Narendra Modi’s suggestion and marked June 21 as International Yoga Day in 2014.

Yoga has multiple health benefits, which are all backed by scientific evidence. It can reduce stress and inflammation, and reduce the risk of high blood pressure, heart-related diseases and arthritis. Yoga helps to boost mindfulness, allows you to sleep better, helps with back pain and improves body stability and flexibility.

International Day of Yoga attempts to spread awareness about the numerous benefits of adding yoga to one’s daily routine. Along with health benefits, yoga also helps to unite society.
