International Day of Yoga

International Day of Yoga

Every year on June 21, we celebrate the International Day of Yoga. The word Yoga comes from the Sanskrit word “yoke” meaning “to join”. Yoga originated in ancient India. Today, yoga is practised worldwide.

This day was first suggested by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing the United Nations in 2014. He selected June 21 as the date for the International Day of Yoga since it is the Summer Solstice. The longest day in the Northern Hemisphere is known as the Summer Solstice. This day is important in Hinduism as well. The UN accepted the suggestion and marked June 21 as International Yoga Day in 2014.

Yoga has multiple health benefits. It can keep you healthy and free from many diseases. On International Day of Yoga, we spread awareness about the health benefits of yoga. We also encourage people to practice yoga every day.
