International Friendship Day

International Friendship Day is celebrated every year on July 30. This day allows us to appreciate the special bond we share with our friends. Friendship Day is celebrated every year in India, Bangladesh and Malaysia on the first Sunday of August. The concept of establishing a special day to celebrate friendships around the world was first proposed by Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmark Cards. International Friendship Day was established by the United Nations in 1997 after a proposal from UNESCO. 

This day celebrates unity across cultures and races. Many people celebrate International Friendship Day by spending time with friends. Some surprise their friends with flowers, gifts and cards. Others write letters to their friends expressing their love and gratitude. 

Every year the UN provides a theme for International Friendship Day. This year’s theme is “Sharing is the human spirit through friendship”.
