International Mountain Day

International Mountain Day

Every year on December 11, we celebrate International Mountain Day to learn about how important mountains are in our world. The United Nations established this day in 2003, and it’s celebrated worldwide.

Mountains cover about 27% of the Earth’s land. They are home to lots of different animals, especially those at risk. Mountains also have many important plants and help regulate the climate.

Mountains need protection because climate change and deforestation are harming them. This causes problems like soil erosion, which affects plants, animals, and people living in the mountains.

This year’s theme for International Mountain Day is “Restoring Mountain Ecosystems.” Let’s take this day to learn more about mountains and understand why they matter so much to us.
