National Maritime Day 2024

Every year on 5 April, we celebrate National Maritime Day in India. This day honours the maritime sector’s important role in our country’s growth. The term “Maritime” means “related to the sea.” India has a vast coastline (boundary between the sea and land). The maritime sector plays an important role in keeping our country secure. It also helps India through trade and transport.

April 5th was announced as National Maritime Day in 1964. In 1919, an Indian-owned ship made an international journey for the first time. The ship named SS Loyalty travelled from Mumbai to the United Kingdom.

Today marks the 60th National Maritime Day of India. To celebrate this occasion, senior workers of this sector are awarded. The celebrations for this day started on 29th March, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was honoured with the ‘Merchant Navy Flag’ pin.

National Maritime Day raises awareness about the challenges faced by India’s maritime sector. It also tries to find solutions to these problems. This day also encourages the young people of India to become a part of this respected industry.
