National Mathematics Day 2023

National Mathematics Day 2023

Every year on 22nd December, we celebrate National Mathematics Day in India. This day honours the great Indian mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan.  Also, it raises awareness about the importance of learning math. Srinivasa Ramanujan reshaped 20th-century mathematics with his mathematic formulas.

On 22nd December 1887, Srinivasa Ramanujan was born in the village of Erode in Tamil Nadu. As a child, he did not receive any formal training in mathematics. However, with his dedication, he grew up to become one of the greatest mathematicians of all time.

He passed away at the young age of 32. In 2012, former Prime Minister, Mr Manmohan Singh announced his birth anniversary as National Mathematics Day. An author named Robert Kanigel wrote a book about Ramanujan’s life. It was later made into an award-winning movie named “The Man Who Knew Infinity.”

On this day, schools, colleges and educational institutes aim to spread knowledge about Mathematics. Students are encouraged to go beyond book learning and to learn from the incredible journey of Srinivasa Ramanujan.
