National Mathematics Day 2023

National Mathematics Day 2023

Every year on 22nd December, we celebrate National Mathematics Day in India to honour the great mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan. The day raises awareness about the importance of learning math and celebrates the contributions made by Srinivasa Ramanujan in the field of mathematics. The field of Mathematics has been advanced by many Indian scholars such as Aryabhatta and Brahmagupta. One such genius scholar was Srinivasa Ramanujan, who reshaped 20th-century mathematics with his theorems.
On 22nd December 1887, Srinivasa Ramanujan was born in the village of Erode in Tamil Nadu. As a child, he did not receive any formal training in mathematics. Since his childhood, he showed great interest in maths and grew up to become one of the greatest mathematicians of all time. Ramanujan resolved theories that seemed almost impossible to solve. Some of his works include the infinite series and number theory.
He passed away at the young age of 32. He became a permanent part of Indian history when former Prime Minister, Mr Manmohan Singh announced his birth anniversary as the National Mathematics Day in 2012. Ramanujan’s biography was written by author Robert Kanigel, and was later adapted into an award-winning movie named “The Man Who Knew Infinity.”
On this day, schools, colleges and educational institutes aim to spread knowledge about Mathematics. Students are encouraged to go beyond book learning and take guidance from the incredible journey of Srinivasa Ramanujan.
