National Milk Day

On 26th November every year, we celebrate National Milk Day in India. It is the birth anniversary of Doctor Verghese Kurien. He helped in the growth of making milk and milk products such as butter and cheese in India. He is also called the “Milkman of India”.

In the 1970s, the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) started a project to make India better at producing milk. At that time, Dr Kurien was the leader of the NDDB. Under his leadership, India became one of the world’s largest providers of milk and its products.

Dr Kurien started the famous company named ‘Amul’. He was given many important awards by the government of India. To pay respect to Dr Kurien, his birth date 26 November was declared as the National Milk Day in 2014. 

National Milk Day shows us the importance of drinking milk. It talks about how drinking milk and eating its products helps us in getting stronger. This day also shows how producing milk has helped India earn money.
