National Milk Day 2023

National Milk Day

On 26th November every year, India celebrates National Milk Day to honour Dr Verghese Kurien. Born on 26th November 1921, Dr Kurien played a very important role in the development of the dairy industry in India and is therefore known as the “Father of the White Revolution”.

In the 1970s, the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) launched Operation Flood to make India self-dependent on milk production. At that time, Dr Kurien was the chairman of the NDDB. Under his leadership, India became one of the world’s largest providers of milk and its products. This operation improved the economic status of rural areas of India.

Dr Kurien established the Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd which later was renamed to Amul. In 1965, he was given the Padma Shri award by the government of India. To pay respect to Dr Kurien’s contribution, his birth date November 26 was declared as the National Milk Day in 2014.

The National Milk Day highlights the importance of milk in our daily diet and educates people on the benefits of milk consumption. This day does not follow any themes, it mainly tries to show the importance of milk industries in the economic growth of our country.
