National Science Day 2024

National Science Day 2024

Every year on February 28th, National Science Day is celebrated in India. This day honours the discovery of the Raman Effect by the Indian scientist CV Raman. This special day also celebrates the important contributions of scientists in improving our day-to-day lives.

CV Raman was born on November 7th, 1888, in Thiruchapalli, Tamil Nadu. On February 28th, 1928, he discovered that when light goes through clear things, like glass, it changes a bit. He called it the “Raman Effect” or “Raman Scattering.” In 1930, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics for this discovery.

CV Raman helped in developing the field of science in India. Sadly, on November 21st, 1970, he passed away at the age of 82. In 1986, February 28th was announced as National Science Day.

The day is celebrated with great pride in India. Schools and colleges plan fun events, asking students to join in and have fun with science activities.
