New York Street Named After Tenzing Norgay

Tenzing Norgay along with Sir Edmund Hillary became the first mountaineers to reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953. Seventy years after this grand feat of achievement, a street in New York city has been named after Tenzing Norgay. The idea was proposed in 2017 and was approved recently due to special efforts of the United Sherpa Association Inc, New York.

A section of the 75th Street in the Woodside locality will be co-named after the mountaineer and called Tenzing Norgay Sherpa Way. On World Everest Day, May 29, an event will be organized at this street to honor Tenzing Norgay by the US Nepal Climbers Association and the United Sherpa Association.

This is not the first time Tenzing Norgay has been honored like this. Previously in 2015, a mountain on Pluto was named Norgay Montes by NASA, to honor Tenzing Norgay.
