Nobel Laureate and Li-ion Battery Developer Passes Away

Born on July 25, 1922, John Bannister Goodenough, was an American physicist, scientist and a Nobel laureate in chemistry. He was born in Jena, Germany. After graduating from Yale University Goodenough served in World War II as a military meteorologist. Meteorologists are experts who study the weather and make forecasts. He got a PhD in physics and became a researcher at MIT London soon after the war ended. Soon, the University of Oxford hired him as the head of the inorganic chemistry laboratory.

Goodenough was most well-known for his creation of Lithium batteries. He developed several types of Li-ion batteries. Li-ion batteries are primarily used in electronics such as cell phones laptops, wireless headphones, toys and more. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2019 at the age of 97. This made him the oldest Nobel laureate in history. Goodenough had won several other awards and medals throughout his life for his work in science. Some of his awards include the Japan Prize, the Copley Medal, the National Medal of Science and the Welch Award.
