Nobel Prize in Medicine 2023

The Nobel Prize is a big award named after Alfred Nobel, a Swedish inventor. He left his wealth to create these awards when he passed away in 1896. They are given every year for outstanding contributions in areas like Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Literature, Economics, and Peace.

Different groups, like the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, present the prizes for specific categories. The first Nobel Prize was given in 1901. A recipient is called a “laureate” and gets a gold medal, money, and a diploma. Usually, up to three people or a group can get a prize in one subject.

This year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was given to Katalin Kariko and Drew Weissman for their important work on vaccines for COVID-19.

Different types of vaccines are used today. One of them is called the mRNA vaccine because it uses mRNA molecules. mRNA is a molecule found inside your body which helps to make proteins. The Nobel Prize winners found that mRNA vaccines can be more effective if certain changes are made to the mRNA being used.
