Nobel Prize in Peace 2023

Nobel Prize in Peace 2023

The Nobel Prize in Peace is awarded annually by the Norwegian Nobel Committee to individuals who have shown outstanding courage, fought for the human rights of oppressed sections of society and promoted peace among groups.

This year, the Nobel Prize in Peace 2023 has been awarded to Iranian activist and physics Narges Mohammadi “for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all”.

Narges Mohammadi was born in 1972. After completing her education, Narges worked as a newspaper columnist, focusing on bringing about a change in Iranian society. She also worked as an engineer during this period. Due to her fight for freedom of expression and women’s rights in Iran, she has been arrested 13 times and sentenced to 31 years in prison and 154 lashes. Even during the announcement of the Nobel Prize in Peace 2023 on October 6, she was still held in Tehran’s Evin prison.

Along with protesting for women’s rights, Narges also campaigned against the use of the death penalty in the Iranian system. Most of the inhabitants in the Iranian prisons have been punished by death since January 2022. Narges also raised her voice against the use of torture of women inmates in the prisons.

Due to her bravery and contribution to improving the current situation of women citizens in Iran, Narges Mohammadi has been presented with the Nobel Prize in Peace 2023. She is the second Iranian woman to win the Nobel Prize after Shirin Ebadi who won in 2003.
