On 6th March 2024, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first underwater metro in India. Situated in Kolkata, this underwater metro covers a distance of 4.8 km under the Hooghly River. It is a part of the Kolkata Metro’s East-West corridor that joins two distant parts of the city of joy-  Howrah and Salt Lake. As per official reports, this metro will cover six stations, out of which three are underground. The metro is expected to cover the underwater portion within 45 seconds.

PM Modi launched the new metro by taking the first ride on the underwater metro with several school students. Several ministers and workers of Kolkata Metro were also present there. A video was released of PM Modi talking to students on this train and waving to passengers of another metro train passing them.

Although the inauguration of the metro took place today, it will be a while before the underwater service is open to the general public. After this inauguration, PM Modi will be launching two new metro routes in Kolkata, one from Kavi Subhash to Hemanta Mukhopadhyay station and the other being Taratala to Majerhat Metro section. After that, he will address the people of Kolkata at a public rally in Barasat.
