Saturn and its disappearing rings

Saturn and its disappearing rings

The sixth planet from the sun, Saturn, is known for the beautiful rings surrounding it. However, as informed by NASA, by 2025 the iconic rings around Saturn won’t be visible from the Earth due to an optical illusion that will take place due to the position of the planet.

Saturn has seven main rings which can be seen from the Earth with the use of a telescope. The rings are mostly made up of millions of small pieces of rock and ice covered with dust. They are believed to be parts of asteroids and comets which broke before they reached the planet.

As Saturn makes its way around the Sun, it will be tilted in such a manner, that the rings will appear too thin to be seen from Earth. This is not the first time that Saturn’s rings have disappeared from view. The rings disappear after every thirteen to fifteen years. The rings will be visible again in 2032 when the planet will rotate and its other side will be visible from the Earth.

According to NASA, the rings of Saturn will only be around for a few hundred million years, as the ring materials are falling into the planet due to gravity. Before 2025, now is the ideal time for space enthusiasts to observe the beautiful Saturn and its rings with the help of a telescope.
