Space Telescope Designed for Sun Mission is Ready

The researchers at Pune’s Inter-University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) have designed a unique Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (SUIT) for the ADITYA-L1 mission of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). The telescope was delivered to ISRO on June 6. The mission is most likely to be launched in August of this year.

Over 200 scientists were involved in making the SUIT project a reality. The telescope is designed to detect and measure solar radiation, ranging from Hard X-ray to Infrared, and measure the particles in the solar wind and the sun’s magnetic field. The device will come in handy during ISRO’s ADITYA-L1 mission, which is going to be ISRO’s first space observatory for the study of the Sun.

The space observatory will travel from Earth to the Lagrange point or L1 point, which is one of the 5 best spots for viewing the Sun. One of the main aims of the mission will be to send regular images of the Sun and updates on its surface activities and weather in space.
