On March 7th, 1987, 37 years ago, legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar became the first batsman in history to score 10000 test runs. This milestone was achieved during the fifth Test of the series against Pakistan in Ahmedabad, marking a special milestone in Gavaskar’s brilliant career.

This historical moment took place in the Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Before the 124th Test match of his career, Gavaskar needed 58 runs to achieve this feat. With his 58th run in this match, Gavaskar created history in the field of cricket. He celebrated his win by sprinting across the cricket field. The crowd was overjoyed and broke into the cricket field to congratulate Gavaskar. 

Today, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) honoured Sunil Gavaskar on the 37th anniversary of this historic moment. As Sunil Gavaskar is a commentator in the ongoing India vs England Test series, there he was presented with a cake in the commentary room. The BCCI released a video of the celebration, where Gavaskar expressed his gratitude, calling March 7th a special day in Indian cricket history.

Gavaskar’s journey to 10,000 Test runs was not merely a personal triumph but also a significant moment in the narrative of Indian cricket. With nicknames like the “Little Master,” Sunil Gavaskar has had one of the most illustrious careers in Indian cricket.
