Today in 2010, Burj Khalifa was Officially Opened in Dubai

On January 4th, fourteen years ago, the iconic Burj Khalifa which is the world’s tallest building, was officially opened in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Also referred to as the ‘Vertical City,’ this building stands 828 meters tall. It was named in honour of Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a former president of the United Arab Emirates.

The UAE government built the Burj Khalifa to diversify the country’s economy, which was mostly dependent on the oil trade. It boosted tourism as people from around the world came to visit this architectural marvel. Architect Adrian Smith and his team designed it, taking inspiration from a local dessert flower called the spider lily.

The Burj Khalifa has residential apartments, corporate offices, restaurants, hotels, and many more facilities. There are observation decks present on levels 148, 125, and 124 that offer a remarkable view of Dubai. Before the Burj Khalifa graced the skyline in 2010, the title of the world’s tallest building belonged to Taipei 101 in Taiwan.

The Burj Khalifa is not only an architectural wonder but has also become a global symbol of UAE’s growth and prowess. It is frequently featured in Hollywood movies and is one of the most photographed buildings on Earth. It took six years to build this building, and on January 4th, 2010, its launch was televised globally. The Burj Khalifa has become synonymous with Dubai’s modern skyline.
