Women Come Together to Plant Mangrove Saplings in Sundarbans

The Sundarbans Reserve Forest is located across India and Bangladesh. It is one of the largest forests in the world. It is famous for the different species of animals and plants. There are many animals in the Sundarbans such as the famous Royal Bengal Tiger, monkeys, spotted deers, lizards, crocodiles and 260 varieties of bird species. Sundarbans was also declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987.

The Sundarbans has been the largest mangrove forest in the world for decades. Despite this, the area of Mangrove forests in the West Bengal side has been decreasing. To make up for this, the local women living near the Sundarbans have started planting Mangrove saplings along the riverside. Mangrove trees help to protect against floods. Planting Mangrove saplings can be helpful because in some parts of the Sundarbans, floods, landslides and erosion of soil are common. These natural disasters cause a lot of damage to the plants in those areas.
