World Book and Copyright Day 2024

World Book and Copyright Day 2024

Every year on 23 April, World Book and Copyright Day is celebrated around the world. This day promotes the habit of reading. Books are the gateway to a different world, a much more colourful and vibrant one. Through books, we can live different lives, travel to faraway lands, and feel the joy of imagination.

Also known as the International Day of the Book, this day tries to make sure that authors have the proper rights of their books. It is common for books to be copied and sold without the author’s consent, which can harm both the author and the publishing houses. Therefore, copyrights are important as they give ownership of the book to the author.

UNESCO selected 23rd April as World Book and Copyright Day as many renowned authors such as William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega died on this day. This decision was taken at the 1995 UNESCO General Conference in Paris.

In conclusion, this day celebrates the magic of books. We can celebrate this special day by reading a book, going to a library or donating books to charities. We should only buy books which are published under proper copyright laws. This will make sure that the rights of the authors are respected.
