World Cancer Day 2024

World Cancer Day 2024

Every year on 4th February, World Cancer Day is observed globally to raise awareness about cancer, its prevention, and the importance of early detection. This day tries to educate people about this disease so that the right actions are taken to prevent and fight against it. World Cancer Day breaks down myths, raises awareness, and reduces stigma about cancer.

The Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) initiated World Cancer Day in 2000 to promote cancer awareness. In 2022, a three-year campaign was started by the UICC with the theme of “Close the Care Gap: Everyone Deserves Access To Cancer Care,” highlighting the need for global teamwork in the fight against cancer. 2024 marks the last year of the campaign. According to the official website of World Cancer Day, this year is about engaging world leaders to take action to eliminate health inequities and make resources available to everyone.

The theme of the campaign for the years 2019-2021 was “I Am and I Will”.

With the introduction of World Cancer Day, a group of same-minded people have come together to spread important knowledge about the disease. In 2022, UICC was able to teach the general public about the cost of cancer care and how the poorer section of society needs help to gain cancer care. In 2023, events and programs were organised globally to support those battling the crisis.

Even though it is dangerous, cancer is curable with the right medical treatment and care. This day brings to attention the need for people to unify to achieve a world without cancer.
