World Earth Hour Day 2024

World Earth Hour Day 2024

Earth Hour is a global movement organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The aim behind this is to raise awareness about climate change and promote environmental sustainability.

This symbolic event encourages individuals, communities, and businesses worldwide to turn off non-essential lights and appliances for one hour, typically from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM on the last Saturday of March.

Earth Hour is celebrated in various ways across the globe. Communities organize events such as lighting candles, concerts, and outdoor activities to mark the occasion. Landmarks and iconic buildings in major cities, including the Eiffel Tower, Sydney Opera House, and Empire State Building, participate by switching off their lights, symbolizing unity in the fight against climate change.

This day was first observed in 2007 by the WWF in Sydney, Australia, when 2.2 million people and 2,000 businesses turned off their lights for one hour to demonstrate their commitment to fighting climate change. This event sparked a global phenomenon, with Earth Hour quickly spreading to become one of the largest movements for the environment.

In 2023, many Indian cities like Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi, turned the lights off for public places and some temples for 60 minutes to show their support towards the movement.

On March 15th, 2024, on the social media platform, X, WWF released an Earth Day anthem composed by Shantanu Moitra and sung by Papon. The song encourages people to protect nature.

Earth Hour inspires millions to reflect on their environmental impact and take steps towards positive change.
