World Hearing Day 2024

World Hearing Day 2024

Every year on March 3rd, World Hearing Day is celebrated around the world. This day aims to raise awareness about how to prevent deafness and hearing loss. It also promotes accessible ear and hearing care across the world. This day tries to break down the stigma around deafness and provide people with knowledge about it.

In 2007, the World Health Organisation (WHO) observed World Hearing Day for the first time. It was first known as International Ear Care Day and was later renamed by WHO in 2016. According to WHO, more than 1 billion people between the age of 12-35 are in danger of hearing loss. On this day, WHO asks various governments, institutions and people across the world to promote safe hearing.

The theme this year is “Changing Mindsets: Let’s Make Ear and Hearing Care a Reality for All.” The theme is selected by WHO every year. Other than that, WHO also develops evidence-based brochures, flyers, posters etc to educate the general population.

An event is organised at the headquarters of the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Geneva on this day. To celebrate this day, we can take some steps to prevent hearing loss. Some such steps are:

  • Using earplugs in noisy places
  • Going to regular doctor visits
  • Not putting anything inside of the ear canal
  • Not listening to extra loud music or noise

We can celebrate this day by practising such habits and educating others about it.
