World Metrology Day

World Metrology Day

World Metrology Day is celebrated every year on May 20. This day reminds us of the importance of metrology in our daily lives. The science of all types of measurements is called metrology. On this day, the Metre Convention was signed in 1875. The International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) established the Metre Convention to start a global system of measurement.

Metrology is used in almost all disciplines including science, business, research, trading and consumer protection. For this reason the idea of celebrating World Metrology Day was proposed in the General Conference of Weights and Measures (CGPM) in 1985.

The General Conference of Weights and Measures and the International Bureau of Weights and Measures jointly organize and celebrate World Metrology Day. Every year they put out a theme for the day. This year the theme for World Metrology Day is Measurements Supporting the Global Food System. The reason for choosing this theme is the recent global population rise and the growing problem of climate change.
