World Milk Day

World Milk Day

Every year on June 1 we observe World Milk Day. This day was established by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in 2001. Since then every year, this day is celebrated to spread awareness about the benefits of consuming milk. The aim of observing this day is to educate people about the importance of having milk in a balanced diet and honor the dairy sector.

June 1 was selected as the ideal date for celebrating World Milk Day as it does not coincide with the National Milk Day celebrated by several countries around the world. In India, National Milk Day is celebrated on November 26, which is the birth anniversary of Dr. Verghese Kurien, who is also called the “Father of White Revolution in India”. He was the founder of the famous brand, Amul. Even though many countries have a National Day for Milk, they come together to celebrate Global Milk Day on June 1.

As per the data of Food and Agricultural Organization Corporate Statistical database (FAOSTAT), India is the leading producer of milk in the world, contributing to 24% of the global milk production. This is why India is sometimes referred to as the Milk Capital of the World. The second largest milk producing country in the world is the United States of America.
