World Poetry Day 2024

World Poetry Day 2024

Every year on 21st March, we celebrate World Poetry Day. This day is celebrated around the world to honour one of the most beautiful creations of the human mind- poetry. Poetry is a type of writing where words are written using rhythm and rhyme that creates many emotions and pictures in our minds. This day promotes the reading, writing, publishing, and teaching of poetry worldwide.

The oldest known poem in the world is the “Epic of Gilgamesh,” which was written nearly 4000 years ago. Poems have been a part of our history for a long time. In 1999, 21st March was declared as World Poetry Day.

This year, the theme of this day is ‘Standing on the Shoulders of Giants’. This theme highlights the legendary writers of the past.

World Poetry Day is celebrated around the world with cultural programs being arranged, where people of all ages are inspired to write and learn poetries. It is a day when people honour the great poets, from Rabindranath Tagore to Emily Dickinson.
